This was my first image in the morning and I’m glad I made it then, because weather-wise the day deteriorated rapidly and when I left work I needed an umbrella.
I have no idea what language that is on the cover of the spare tyre. Must be something like Thai, but I am not at all sure. Any idea? Even what it means?
From yesterday evening I still had the Sigma 30/1.4 mounted, and that’s what I used, albeit at f8.
On her album “Take a Look” Natalie Cole sings a version of the Count Basie standard “Fiesta in Blue” that basically is identical to the Lambert, Hendricks & Ross version on “Sing a Song of Basie“, she even sings Jon Hendricks’ lyrics. I mean, she is good. The whole album is good, but you’d better not compare it to the original by LH&R. On the other hand: even Manhattan Transfer pale against them, so why shouldn’t Natalie?
The Lensbaby is great for abstracting parts of an image that would look busy with an ordinary lens. You simply bend the lens and throw these parts out of focus. At least that’s what one normally does, but nobody says that you have to stop at that. What about bending the lens so much that everything is wildly distorted and more or less out of focus? What about using the linear distortions and aligning them with lines of strong contrast in the scene?
That’s what happened here. This is Trautsongasse, a short street in Vienna’s 8th district that is frequently used as location in movies. Well, on Thursday I was out to lunch and when returning I shot this image. I was mainly interested in using and accentuating the strong contrasting lines in the center. Bending the lens so strongly, made the whole scene look somehow liquid, like melting, and this is another thing that fits, because it was an unusually hot day.
The Song of the Day is “In Liquid Days” from Philip Glass’ 1986 album “Songs from Liquid Days“, a collaboration with Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Paul Simon, Suzanne Vega, the Kronos Quartet, Linda Ronstadt and others. And not only that, it’s even good 🙂
Nothing has moved, still the Nikon 50/1.8 and Nikon Capture NX. I shot the image this morning in Mariahilfer Straße. It is not the first time that I tackle this shadow, but it’s the first time that I’m satisfied.
For me this image is all about light and also about light is the Song of the Day. I never heard XTC when they were popular, but I have salvaged that some years ago. Enjoy “We’re All Light” on “Wasp Star (Apple Venus Volume 2)“.
Oh, by the way, five days ago when the stars were falling, I wondered where these bizarre reflections came from. Well, I was there again today, I looked, I tried to find out, but to no avail. Maybe it is Microsoft?
