One day too late. I hoped I would write a week’s worth of blog posts during yesterday’s commute from Vienna to Carinthia, but then the train was cancelled due to a storm in Germany and I decided to rent a car.
In the end I was one hour earlier in Villach than usual, but the more than three hours of driving had cost me all energy for the day and nothing got written 🙂
Here are the last two images from Sopron, two places to get your stuff from, and if you don’t need stuff, you can always go there for some color 😀
The Song of the Day is “Stuff” from Miles Davis’ album “Miles In The Sky”. Hear it on YouTube.
Right at the center of Sopron is the church of a former Benedictine monastery, today also a museum. Below the church is a crypt that is seemingly still in use as a final rest.
The Song of the Day is “Deathbed Versions” by Joe Henry. Hear it on YouTube.
I’m not a religious man, to the contrary, the older I get, the more determined becomes my atheism, but that does not keep me from going into churches or, as rare as they are around here after Nazi barbarism, into synagogues.
Regardless of where you look and what time we’re talking about, sacred architecture has always been among the most interesting, simply because so much money and devotion went into it.
Today’s images were also taken in Sopron where of course I couldn’t resist the lure of holy places. The Image of the Day has been taken in the Old Synagogue, today a small museum. The other images are of two minor churches.
The Song of the Day is “God Don’t Like Ugly” by Roberta Flack. Hear it on YouTube.
Sopron is a city in Hungary just across the Austrian border. From Vienna by car it is not more than 45 minutes away, and still, it was only recently that I first visited it.
Having been destroyed by a catastrophic fire in 1676, the city was born again as a jewel of the Baroque age. After much neglect during the communist era, Sopron is becoming beautiful again and in fact so much so, that I was shocked. I just wasn’t expecting anything like the layered structure of concentric, oval streets connected by countless passage ways and the incredibly beautiful walk along the old walls enclosing the historic center.
Sopron is one of those places that can’t be confused with any other. It’s crazy to have lived in its vicinity for 30 years and not to have known about its beauty.
The Song of the Day is “I’m Beginning To See The Light” by Ella Fitzgerald. Hear it on YouTube.
